If you look carefully you can see a faint tracing of the canvas’s cross-shaped stretcher bars onto the picture surface. Exposing the supporting structure emphasizes the material status of the painting as a physical object rather than an illusionistic picture. This unusual approach relates to Miró’s stated interest in making painting become “part of the real itself.”
