Modern and Contemporary Art Portrait of Professor Gosset c. 1917-18 Raymond Duchamp-Villon (Pierre-Maurice-Raymond Duchamp), French, 1876 - 1918 Plaster * Gallery 186, Modern and Contemporary Art, first floor 1950-134-84 The Louise and Walter Arensberg Collection, 1950 |
LabelProbably the sculptor's last work, this portrait depicts the army doctor who attended Duchamp-Villon after he contracted typhoid fever at the front. The tiny disembodied head is reduced to the form of a skull with sunken eye sockets and a dark, pitted surface. It seems to reveal the artist's sense of his own mortality as he approached an untimely death.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons. Although gallery locations on the website are updated regularly, there is no guarantee that this object will be on display on the day of your visit. |
