Half Standing Figure

1915
Jacques Lipchitz (American (born Lithuania), 1891–1973)
Before the war, Jacques Lipchitz had a studio in Montparnasse in the artists’ complex called La Ruche. Lipchitz made Half-Standing Figure at the pinnacle of his experimentation with Cubism. Reduced to a set of streamlined, interlocking planes, the human figure takes on an architectural quality. Lipchitz defined this period in his art as “the epoch of cathedrals,” and compared this upward-reaching piece to the soaring heights of Gothic architecture.
