ProvenanceWith Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, Paris (probably still in 1946) [1]. With Sam Salz, New York, by 1949; sold to Louis E. Stern, New York, March 31, 1949 [2]; bequest to PMA, 1963. 1. According to the Dauberville catalogue raisonné (1974) the painting was included in the 1946 Bonnard exhibition at Bernheim-Jeune, but did not appear in the catalogue. The back of the painting has no label from this exhibition; however, the stretcher appears newer and may be a replacement. 2. Copy of dated receipt from Salz to Stern in curatorial file, with provenance listing Bernheim-Jeune as former owner. Salz may have purchased the painting from the 1946 Bernheim-Jeune Bonnard exhibition: according to Louis Stern's provenance notes for Bonnard's "After the Shower" (PMA 1963-181-1), Salz bought several paintings from this show (PMA Archives, Stern files). |
