(David William Trail) Cargill (1872-1939), Stanmore, Lanark, Scotland [2]; sale, Cargill Estate, Parke-Bernet, New York, January 6, 1949, no. 50; purchased by Louis E. Stern, New York [3]; bequest to PMA, 1963. 1. According to R. Fernier, La vie et l'oeuvre de Gustave Courbet: catalogue raisonné, Geneva, 1978, vol. II, no. 778. 2. D. W. T. Cargill (1872-1939) and his brother William A. Cargill (d. 1962) were noted collectors of nineteenth-century paintings. 3. Copy of dated receipt from Parke-Bernet to Stern in curatorial file. A note in the Louis Stern files in the PMA archives indicates that Bignou (Bignou Gallery) in New York acted as agent for the Cargill Estate.
