The Honorable Colonel Stuart, London [1]. Thomas Francis Robins [2]. With Renaissance Galleries, Philadelphia; with Hammer Galleries, New York, 1941 [3]; Mr. and Mrs. D. Clifford Ruth, Bryn Mawr, PA; gift to PMA, 1967. 1. According to a handwritten note on the verso of the painting, probably written about 1872, it was "originally in the collection of the Honorable Col. Stuart, twin brother of Francis, 9th Earl of Moray." The 9th Earl of Moray had a brother named James who was a colonel, but they were not twins. The 10th Earl of Moray had a twin brother named Archibald. See von Erffa and Staley, no. 365, no. 4. 2. The note on the verso refers to a gift to Thomas Francis Robins as a "memento of grateful regard from . . . Christmas Eve 1872." 3. Catalogued in 1941 as "The Transfiguration."* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
