Modern and Contemporary Art Woman Sleeping in an Armchair Made in United States, North and Central America1923 Jules Pascin, American (born Bulgaria), 1885 - 1930 Oil and charcoal on canvas Currently not on view 1967-30-67 The Samuel S. White 3rd and Vera White Collection, 1967 |
LabelThis affectionate portrait depicts Andrée, one of Pascin’s favorite models, asleep in his studio on the Boulevard de Clichy in Paris. A note in the artist’s hand on the back of the canvas confirms that Andrée is reclining on a bergère (an upholstered French armchair designed for lounging in comfort). A bouquet of flowers appears to have slipped out of her left hand. Sensitively drawn in charcoal and then delicately painted in thin washes of oil paint, this carefully observed scene is typical of Pascin’s mature work, which primarily focused on representations of clothed or naked female models. |
