Sakya Lamas in Heavy Robes with Lam-dre Lineage

c. 15th century
Artist/maker unknown, Tibetan
These four lamas wear heavy cloaks that drape elegantly over their shoulders and bunch warmly about their folded legs. Each robe is made of patterned Chinese brocade. Both the small blue deity in the middle at the bottom (Mahakala) and the red-colored goddess above him (Sarvabuddhadakini) are considered special protectors of the Sakya order of Tibetan Buddhism.
