Rodin Museum Scene from the French Revolution Made in France, EuropeModeled c. 1879 Auguste Rodin, French, 1840 - 1917 Wax on wood * Rodin Museum, North Gallery 1970-4-1 Purchased with Museum funds, 1970 |
LabelThis small study for a sculpture suggests that Rodin planned to enter a competition for a monument to the French Republic held in Paris in 1879. Although difficult to interpret, the scene likely represents the enrollment of volunteers in the Army of the French Revolution of 1792. The sculptor does not seem to have taken his ideas any further than this sketch created in the pliable medium of wax.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons. Although gallery locations on the website are updated regularly, there is no guarantee that this object will be on display on the day of your visit. |
