European Decorative Arts and Sculpture Bust of Georges de La Faye Made in France, Europe1769 Jean-Jacques Caffieri, French, 1725-1792 Terracotta * Gallery 288, European Art 1500-1850, second floor 1971-7-1 Purchased with the Fiske Kimball Fund and the Marie Kimball Fund, 1971 |
LabelDe La Faye was an eminent and experienced surgeon, author of a book on the principles of surgery, and vice director of the Royal Academy of Surgery when this portrait was made. This bust is probably the one exhibited at the Salon of 1769. The lively rendering and warmth of the sitter's features reflect Jean-Jacques Caffieri's skill as a maker of naturalistic portraits, which rival in expressive qualities the work of his younger contemporary Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828).* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons. Although gallery locations on the website are updated regularly, there is no guarantee that this object will be on display on the day of your visit. |
