De La Faye was an eminent and experienced surgeon, author of a book on the principles of surgery, and vice director of the Royal Academy of Surgery when this portrait was made. This bust is probably the one exhibited at the Salon of 1769. The lively rendering and warmth of the sitter's features reflect Jean-Jacques Caffieri's skill as a maker of naturalistic portraits, which rival in expressive qualities the work of his younger contemporary Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828).
