Two Women of the Marquesas Islands

Paul Gauguin (French, 1848–1903)

At the end of his life Gauguin devised a way to print drawings with materials readily at hand. He drew on paper placed on top of an inked surface, allowing the pressure of his pencil to pick up ink from below so that the imprint on the back of the paper became a unique work of art. Two Women of the Marquesas Islands was shown at Gauguin's memorial exhibition in Paris in November 1903.
