ProvenanceBashford Dean (1867-1928), Riverdale-on-Hudson, New York City, before 1928 [1]; his sister Harriet Martine Dean (d. 1943), Riverdale-on-Hudson, New York City, by 1941; possibly widow of Bashford Dean, Mary Alice (Dyckman) Dean (1869-1950) [2]; Carl Otto Kretzschmar von Kienbusch (1884-1976), New York; bequest to PMA, 1977. 1. A postcard photo, probably taken before Bashford Dean's death in 1928, shows the painting hanging in his residence (Kienbusch object file). 2. Chandler Rathfon Post (A History of Spanish Painting, vol. 8, pt. 1, 1941, p. 238-240, illus. fig. 106) lists Bashford Dean's sister Harriet M. Dean as the owner as of 1941; however, the Kienbusch object card lists Mrs. Bashford Dean as the source. It is possible that Mrs. Dean inherited the painting from her sister-in-law. |
