Ambroise Vollard (1867-1939), Paris ; Etienne Bignou, Paris; Galerie Tanner, Zurich; Pierre Dubied, Neuchâtel, by 1943 and possibly still in 1956 ; M. Rosset, Geneva ; Wildenstein & Co., New York; sold to Charlotte Dorrance Wright (1911-1977) and William Coxe Wright (d. 1970), St. Davids, PA, April 10, 1958, until his d. 1970 ; Charlotte Dorrance Wright; bequest to PMA, 1978.
1. Ambroise Vollard, Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Tableaux, Pastels et Dessins, Paris, 1918, revised edition, 1989, no. 769, p. 189.
2. The painting was lent to a 1943 Renoir exhibition in Basel from a private collection in Neuchâtel. The only lender from Neuchâtel listed in the front of the catalogue is Pierre Dubied, an industrialist and Renoir collector. It was subsequently lent to the 1956 Renoir exhibition in Vevey, again by a private collection in Neuchâtel. The "Succession Pierre Dubied" is thanked in the catalogue introduction, so apparently M. Dubied was deceased by 1956.
3. The preceding provenance names are from Daulte, Auguste Renoir: catalogue raisonné, 1971, vol. 1, no. 455.
4. Information from 1977 Dorrance Wright estate inventory by Carroll Hogan (registrar file). The painting was included in New York, Wildenstein & Co., "Renoir", April 8-May 10, 1958, no. 44, lent by Mrs. William Coxe Wright.
