Provenance

Armand Parent, Paris; sold to Bernheim-Jeune, Paris (stock no. 21604, "Pot de fleurs"), May 31, 1919; sold to Mancini, Paris, October 27, 1919. Private collection, Geneva. With Galerie Alex Maguy, Paris [1]. Sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, March 9, 1942, no. 98, as "Le Bouquet et la Glace", illus. (from Maguy?). Private collection, as of 1949 [2]. With Niveau Gallery, New York, by 1965; sale, Niveau Gallery, Parke-Bernet, New York, April 14, 1965, no. 39, illus.; purchased by John J. Russick [probably E. J. Rousuck, acting as agent for the following owners], New York [3]; Charlotte Dorrance Wright (1911-1977) and William Coxe Wright (d. 1970), St. Davids, PA, by August 1965, until his d. 1970 [4]; Charlotte Dorrance Wright; bequest to PMA, 1978. 1. Preceding information according to Antoine Salomon and Guy Cogeval, Vuillard: The Inexhaustible Glance: Critical Catalogue of Paintings and Pastels, Paris and Milan, 2003, vol. 2, no. VII-505bis, p. 790. 2. Included in the "Exposition Vuillard," Kunsthalle Basel, 1949, no. 199, listed as "Privatbesitz". 3. Per Salomon/Cogeval. The name is similar to and may be a misprint for E. J. (Emanuel Jay) Rousuck of Wildenstein & Co., through whom the Wrights purchased other works in their collection. Supporting this assumption is the cataloguing by the Wright estate appraiser, Carroll Hogan (copy in curatorial file), which indicates that the Wrights purchased the painting from the Parke-Bernet sale. 4. Exhibited as part of the Coxe Wright collection, California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, August 28-September 26, 1965 (no. 31).
