Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. G. Chaplin in memory of Mia Wood, 1978
Purchased from the artist by Bernheim-Jeune & Cie., Paris, April 30, 1926 (photo no. 5893) . Mrs. Alexander Lieberman, Philadelphia, by 1944 (acquired from Bernheim-Jeune?) ; her sale, Parke-Bernet, New York, February 10, 1944, lot 87 (as "La Neige", illus.); Charles C. G. and Louise C. Chaplin, Haverford, Pa., probably from Lieberman sale ; gift to PMA, 1978.
1. Bernheim-Jeune's records state that the painting was sold to the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, June 19, 1927 (letter from Guy-Patrice Dauberville, Director, Bernheim-Jeune & Cie., dated October 3, 2003, in curatorial file). However, the Carnegie Museum of Art has no record that the painting was ever sold to the museum, although Bernheim-Jeune did lend it to the 1926 Carnegie International (communication dated Feb. 9, 2004). It may have been sold to Mrs. Lieberman from the exhibition.
2. Probably Rena (Wirtschafter) Lieberman (1892-1981), wife of Alexander Lieberman (1886-c. 1941). The School of Paris artist Moïse Kisling painted her portrait during a visit to Paris with her husband in 1925. The 1944 Parke-Bernet catalog gives the provenance as "from Bernheim-Jeune, Paris".
3. According to a note in the curatorial file, the Chaplins bought the painting in the 1940's from a Parke-Bernet sale, probably the Lieberman sale.
