Still Life with Apples

1858
John F. Francis (American, c. 1808–1886)
Philadelphia artist John F. Francis updated American still-life painting during the 1850s by introducing into his designs the movement and lively color found here. Golden cider awaits drinking. Chestnuts tumble and scatter freely. Brightly colored apples cascade from a straw basket. All in all, Francis’s autumnal table setting encourages the savoring of seasonal pleasures. Such invitations to indulgence came to define American still life during this era of rapid change and industrialization
