Additional information:Book four of the Indian epic the Ramayana tells of the alliance of the monkey kingdom with the Hindu god Rama in his quest to rescue his wife Sita. Seated on the throne, Sugriva, who with Rama's help has been reinstated as king of the monkeys, instructs the monkey chief Hanuman in his mission. Hanuman, shown again exiting from the cave to lead the rescue party, will perform such prodigious feats as bridging the sea from India to Lanka in one leap and setting fire to Lanka in order to rescue Sita. Together, the great deeds of Hanuman and the valor and cunning of Sugriva and his army help Rama defeat the demon king Ravana and bring Sita back to India. This episode is set in the architecture of the resplendent nineteenth-century princely courts of northern India and the lush landscape of the Panjab Hills, a world created of sharply edged rocks and caves dotted with vegetation and lined with veins of precious metals. Stella Kramrisch, from Philadelphia Museum of Art: Handbook of the Collections (1995), p. 61.
