LabelIn 1967, the City of Philadelphia awarded Lipchitz his second commission for a public monument: a large sculpture to be installed on the southeast plaza of the Municipal Services Building, directly opposite City Hall. This initial study for the monument, first made in plaster and later cast in bronze, recalls earlier sculptures such as Rescue of the Child, in which Lipchitz created a towering monument with multiple tiers of people supporting each other's weight. These figures carry aloft an unfurled flag of Philadelphia, an image of civic pride reminiscent of Lipchitz's political works of the 1930s. |
