Portrait of Colonel Lambert Cadwalader (1743-1823)Made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, North and Central America
Charles Willson Peale, American, 1741 - 1827
Oil on canvas
|Purchased for the Cadwalader Collection with funds contributed by the Mabel Pew Myrin Trust and the gift of an anonymous donor, 1983|
LabelLambert was John Cadwalader's brother and business partner and, like him, participated in the Revolutionary War. After leaving the army, he represented New Jersey in the Continental Congress and the U. S. Congress. Peale created this depiction of Lambert, and that of his sister Martha, in a manner ambitiously stylish. The two siblings are placed in different settings, but are paired by the soft blues in their clothing and the use of graceful, serpentine lines.
