East Asian Art Lidded Bowl with Peonies Made in Korea, AsiaJoseon Dynasty (1392-1910), 19th century Artist/maker unknown, Korean Porcelain with underglaze cobalt blue decoration * Gallery 237, Asian Art, second floor 1985-81-11a,b Gift of Colonel Stephen McCormick, 1985 |
LabelCovered porcelain bowls were steadily produced from the early Joseon dynasty, but those created later in the period were much larger, like this example. The peony branches and flowers motif on this work is commonly found on jars, dishes, and bowls produced in the last half of the nineteenth century. Judging from the sophisticated brushwork, pure white clay body, and evenly applied glaze, this bowl is probably a product of the official royal kiln at Bunwon-ri, near Seoul.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
