Capriccio with Figures in a Landscape

c. 1720-1730
Marco Ricci (Italian (active Venice, Veneto, Rome, and England) 1676–1730)
This poetic drawing is one of many that Marco Ricci executed in the last decade of his career, when he worked extensively in opaque watercolor on parchment. Ricci's aptitude for delicate atmospheric effects is evident in the softly diffused lighting of the background and the reflections in the water.
