Edward Lear (English, 1812–1888)

Mahabalipooram, on the Bay of Bengal in the province of Madras, India, is an important early Hindu temple site. Lear may have visited it when he toured the subcontinent in 1873-75, and then painted this picture several years later at his home in the south of France.
