The debonair subject of this portrait, Gustave-Lucien Dennery, was one of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's fellow students in the studio of Fernand Cormon in Paris during the mid-1880s. Studying with Cormon at the same time were Vincent van Gogh, Emile Bernard, and Louis Anquetin. In his later life, Dennery became known as a painter of portraits and genre subjects.
