Zélie (Jeanne-Zélie-Melodie Courbet, 1828-1875)

c. 1850
Gustave Courbet (French, 1819–1877)
Jeanne-Zélie-Melodie Courbet, the second of the artist's three sisters, appears in several of his compositions. Often in fragile health, she was the most reserved and pious member of his family--qualities that Gustave Courbet captured in this direct, gentle, luminous portrait.
