Paul Cézanne: Two Sketchbooks
Like the copy after another picture in Rubens's Maria de' Medici cycle on the recto of this page (see Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1987-53-12a) and the one in Sketchbook II, page XLI verso (see Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1987-53-70b), this one, which is based on the Birth of Louis XIII, isolates a single figure at the right edge of the composition. But in contrast to the drawing of the elegantly costumed figure of France on the recto, this one emphasizes the powerful stature and sculptural form of the virtually nude figure of Health. At least this is true of the lower half; in the upper half it is much flatter, and the baby in the arms of Health is oddly diminutive. Theodore Reff, from Paul Cézanne: Two Sketchbooks (1989), p. 60.
