Paul Cézanne: Two Sketchbooks
Previously described as a "fabric…[that] swells like a wave" (Chappuis, Adrien. The Drawings of Paul Cézanne. 2 vols. Greenwich, Conn., 1973), the object in the foreground of this sketch is more likely a bowler hat partly covered by a garment, very much like the same objects, more explicitly represented, on page XXXVIII verso of this sketchbook (see Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1987-53-67b).
