  • PublicationPaul Cézanne: Two Sketchbooks

The least developed of the three drawings Cézanne made of the Hellenistic group Aphrodite and Eros in the Louvre, this is also the weakest as a representation and as a graphic statement. In the others (see Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1987-53-66b; Chappuis, Adrien. The Drawings of Paul Cézanne. 2 vols. Greenwich, Conn., 1973, no. 1043), he achieves a balance between the definition of forms and the tracing of curvilinear patterns that is less evident here. Theodore Reff, from Paul Cézanne: Two Sketchbooks (1989), p. 191.
