A study for the left side of a composition of eight female bathers, known in two paintings of the early 1890s (Venturi, Lionello.
Cézanne, son art--son oeuvre. 2 vols. Paris, 1936, nos. 539-40, dated too early) and one done later in that decade (Rubin, William, ed.
Cézanne: The Late Work. New York, 1977, pl. 195). Cézanne's first conception, embodied in a still more summary sketch of the three bathers at the left side (see Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1987-53- 46b), is here developed further in the direction of the paintings, though many parts still remain vaguely defined. Theodore Reff, from
Paul Cézanne: Two Sketchbooks (1989), p. 203.
