  • PublicationPaul Cézanne: Two Sketchbooks

Drawn in swift, heavily repeated strokes producing strongly contrasted lights and darks, and enlarged to fill the entire surface, these familiar pieces of apparel acquire through Cézanne's vision the power and grandeur of the monumental human forms he admired in older art. There is a sketch of the same or very similar objects, smaller in scale, weaker in execution, on page III recto of this sketchbook (see Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1987-53-39a). Theodore Reff, from Paul Cézanne: Two Sketchbooks (1989), p. 210.
