A study for the three figures at the left side in paintings of five or six male bathers (Venturi, Lionello.
Cézanne, son art--son oeuvre. 2 vols. Paris, 1936, nos. 541, 582, 590) of the early 1890s. The two at the left are easily recognized, and indeed appear in many other studies in this sketchbook (see Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1987-53-74b). The one at the right, more briefly indicated and now obscured by smudging, is the bather on the opposite bank, lowering himself into the water, of which there is a more complete and vigorous study on the front endpaper of this sketchbook (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1987-53-37b).
