Although not previously identified as such, the subject is undoubtedly Cézanne's young son Paul, at about the same age as in the sketches on pages 3 verso and 10 verso in this sketchbook (see Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1987-53-4b, 1987-53-9b), and with the same sullen expression as in a sketch on a larger sheet of studies (Chappuis, Adrien.
