The comic song Love and Rheumatism relates the trials of a young woman who has married a hypochondriacal older man and is forced to be a nurse against her wishes. Despite the smile on her face, she does not recommend her lot to others. Here the "patient" winces as his back is massaged; other requisites for his health--bottles of medicine and a clyso-pompe, an enema apparatus popular in nineteenth-century France--are on the night table.
