The chief product of the Liebig company was a concentrated meat extract that was marketed throughout Europe and the Americas. Purchasers of the extract received tokens that could be exchanged for a series of cards such as this set on the applied arts; each card also shows an illustration of the product's package. Liebig encouraged people to collect the cards by also providing albums for the sets. In some instances information on the images appeared on the reverse of the card, but in the majority of cases, as in these examples, recipes incorporating one of the Liebig products were given. This set, one of approximately two thousand series of chromolithographed trade cards on hundred of subjects that company issued between 1872 and 1974, was published in Antwerp. William H. Helfand, from The Picture of Health: Images of Medicine and Pharmacy from the William H. Helfand Collection (1991), p. 115.
