Linen plain weave with silk embroidery in cross, satin, Algerian eye, stem, chain, buttonhole, back, Holbein, knotted buttonhole filling, fishbone, fern, seed, and Montenegrin cross stitches, bullion and French knots; metal thread embroidery in cross stitch; linen drawn thread hem stitch.

    This sampler was worked in two sections that eventually would have been sewn together in the form shown here. It is one of six examples made between 1691 and 1710 in association with the needlework teacher Judith Hayl. The names of comparatively few such teachers are known, and Hayl is the earliest English needlework instructor to have been identified. Her initials appear to the left of the box at the bottom, with those of her student, Elizabeth Burton, to the right. Dilys E.
