At the end of his life, Renoir returned to sculpture, entrusting the modeling to Louis Fernand Morel, a promising young sculptor. The two artists made three reliefs together that they later cast in terracotta and bronze. The motifs of dancers and musicians evoke the carefree spirit of mythic antiquity that Renoir had long admired in the Roman frescoes of Pompeii.
