Flask

15th century
Artist/maker unknown, Korean
The simplified depiction of peonies on this flask was created by quickly incising the pattern into the surface after it had been immersed in white slip that made it leather-hard. A specific stage during the drying of pottery, “leather-hard” means that the clay is still damp and yet dry enough to be incised without breaking.
