Large Grotesque Head (Man with Warts)

c. 1622
José Jusepe de Ribera, also called Lo Spagnoletto (Spanish (active Naples), 1591–1652)
Ribera, a Spaniard, spent much of his career in Naples. The naturalism favored by many Neapolitan artists is pushed to an extreme in this print, an image so starkly realistic that the man's condition (Von Recklinhausen Disease) has been diagnosed by modern authorities.
