LabelIn the twentieth century, as the eastern United States became more industrialized and urban, objects and images that evoked the ruggedness of the American West became popular. The iconography of this Tray, which is part of a punch service---the representation of American Indian heads and bear pelt, together with the stone arrowheads and horn ladle handle---came to symbolize the country's uniqueness and strength as it was taking its place as a world power.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
