Radha Enters a Walled Garden, Where Krishna Awaits Her

c. 1660-1690
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
In Rasikapriya illustrations, the heroes and heroines are often depicted as Radha and Krishna. This scene shows Radha and her companion approaching Krishna, who awaits her in a lush garden filled with blossoming trees and large leaves. Radha shyly approaches her lover, guided by her companion. Bees play around the hero and heroine, evoking the lazy spring and perhaps alluding to one of Krishna's identities-the slayer of the demon Madhu (honey).
