Krishna and Balarama Take a Meal of Rice Boiled in Milk

c. 1760-1765
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
On reaching Mathura, the blue-skinned god Krishna and Balarama take a casual stroll to see the arena where the tournament will be held. There, however, Krishna accidentally breaks King Kansa's great sacrificial bow and the brothers destroy an army of demon guards, earning them instant renown. Deciding it is best to await the tournament outside the city walls, Krishna, Balarama, and the cowherds pitch their tents, eat a quiet meal of sweet rice, and comfortably fall asleep.
