The Box of 1932

1932
Marcel Duchamp (American (born France), 1887–1968)
After becoming a delegate to the World Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1931, Duchamp collaborated with the French chess player and theorist Vitaly Halberstadt on Opposition and Sister Squares Are Reconciled, a book that studied endgame strategies. In this recycled cardboard box, Duchamp assembled the manuscripts, proofs, diagrams, drawings, and notes produced in the process of the book’s publication with other chess-related records.
