Woman's '"Flying Saucer" Dress

Spring/Summer 1994
Designed by Issey Miyake (Japanese, 1938–2022)
Issey Miyake blends his Japanese heritage and his training in Western couture to expand the concept of clothing. Here, rings of color emphasize the eccentric "paper lantern" silhouette created by the permanently pleated polyester and the garment’s seamed construction. The tubular dress simply pulls on, taking its ever-changing shape from the body beneath; when removed, it returns to its preset folds and collapses like a Slinky toy for storage.
