Alfred Stieglitz at Lake George

1929 negative); 1929 (print)
Paul Strand (American, 1890–1976)
In this portrait by Paul Strand, whose early work was featured in a solo show at Stieglitz's 291 gallery and published in the last issue of Camera Work in 1917, Stieglitz is seen looking into his 4 x 5-inch Graflex camera. Stieglitz made contact prints-using the full negative at its original size-from many of his Graflex negatives, which makes it easy to find which pictures were taken with this handheld camera. Look for some of them among the portraits of Georgia O'Keeffe and Dorothy Norman, and in the Equivalents series.
