LabelThis is one of a group of similar quilts produced in the late nineteenth through early twentieth centuries in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The design of an eagle wearing a shield is said to have originated during the American Civil War and is probably derived from the Great Seal of the United States. The central stylized star pattern within an abstract sun - common to all of the quilts in the group - is reminiscent of Pennsylvania German barn signs; the single tulip in each corner is unique to this example. The quiltmaker, Mrs. Elizabeth Ebersole, lived with her husband, John, on a farm on Colebrook Road in Elizabethtown. |
