Young Child, Nude, and Chaperone

1883-1885
Circle of Thomas Eakins (American, 1844–1916)
"It is a pity," wrote one art critic, "that American pruriency forbids, as a general thing, the photographing of little children nude or semi-nude, for some of the most artistically exquisite effects that human life has to offer are thus lost to the world." Photographic sessions with children especially required the presence of chaperones, such as the one visible on the right.
