Figure in Mountain Landscape II

1998-1999
Peter Doig (British, born 1959)
Peter Doig developed this work from a 1930s black-and-white photograph of Canada's most famous painter, Franklin Carmichael, sketching outdoors. The romantic subject of the artist inspired by the landscape, common in nineteenth-century art, assumes new mystery and uncertainty as it is filtered through photography and rendered in eccentric colors on a dramatic scale.
