European Decorative Arts and Sculpture Bowl from a Childbirth Set Made in Urbino, Italy, Europec. 1560-70 Artist/maker unknown, Italian Tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica) Currently not on view 1999-99-7 125th Anniversary Acquisition. The Howard I. and Janet H. Stein Collection, 1999 |
LabelSeveral pieces in this style are known. This bowl would have belonged to a set of stacking dishes whose extreme precariousness explains why no complete set survives from the Renaissance. However, enough individual examples remain to prove the growth of specialized ceramic types associated with childbirth. We know that they appealed to some rulers since several examples are recorded in an inventory of the Medici family. |
