"In arranging my new apartment I see your paintings again with so much pleasure.... There's such a note of truth, of real countryside in each one."
Letter to van Gogh from his brother Theo, Paris, March 16, 1889
"I've looked most attentively at your works since we parted; first at your brother's and then at the Independents exhibition. I offer you my sincere compliments, and for many artists you are the most remarkable in the exhibition. With things from nature you are the only one there who thinks."
Letter to van Gogh from artist Paul Gauguin, Paris, March 20, 1890

The painting with the boots is such a classic but all the paintings are almost 3D like with heavy dips of oil and streaks of paint....it is just so astonishing to finally see!

loved the exhibit; would like to find time to go back again. The audiotape was OK, but the gentleman was a little pompous with his strained talk of "lyricism" and such. My ideal is for the tape to draw my attention to what makes the painting such an effective piece of art.

very inspiring to me . Love the concept of focusing on the close up and repeating the same subject matter.

I loved Almond Blossoms because the vibrant blue background made the branches look 3-D

My favorite out of all the beautiful paintings was Rain. It's just the way he saw colors amazes me. He would look at a tree, and paint it with these brilliant blues and purples that no one else could notice. He had this eye for beauty even in his still life pictures. In rain, some of the droplets were a beautiful vintage peach color that spoke to me. The muddy path was also a brilliant plus with it's clear slippery brown dirt. I loved the exhibit but especially loved seeing Vincent do what he did best, turn a sunset or a field of wheat into a beautiful and memorable painting.

Haunting forest paintings. 2 figures fading into the undergrowth, like forest spirits. Powerful tree trunks, stand out starkly, jump out at you. Some landscapes undulate, as if the earth beneath had become wavy.

THANK YOU FOR A GREAT SHOW. THE AUDIO IS GOOD BUT COULD BE MORE SPECIFICALLY INFORMATIVE--WHAT KIND OF PAINTS, INFLUENCES FROM OTHER ARTISTS--WHAT WERE THE CRITICS SAYING DURING HIS LIFE REGARDING THE VAN GOGH PAINTINGS.
