Winner - B: Self-Portrait with Mannequins, Hollywood
View both Weegee photographs
As part of the exhibition, First Look: Collecting for Philadelphia (July 13 – September 8, 2013), the Museum presented two photographs by the celebrated artist known as Weegee. A press photographer in New York City, Weegee was embraced by both the popular media and the art world. His uncanny instinct for tracking down newsworthy scenes led to his unique pseudonym—derived, legend has it, from Ouija boards used for fortune-telling.

During the run of the exhibition, the Museum solicited feedback from visitors about which of these two Weegee photographs they thought should enter the Museum’s permanent collection. The Museum is delighted to announce that Self-Portrait with Mannequins, Hollywood generated the most positive feedback.

Thank you to all our visitors for their insightful comments, which you may read below, and to Mr. and Mrs. Anthony D’Orazio, who contributed funds to purchase the photograph.

A. the most interesting part is the woman turned away from the camera. that's an entire story in and of itself, and invites the viewer to wonder...

We (two good friends) pick B because the wit and humor matches our mood at the moment. Like us, the figures in the picture are on a "road tour."

B - his eyes are creepy but almost outrageous creepy. And that one women in the picture is real, which might be even more creepy with the reflection on her eyes. Plus it reminds me of the WWII propaganda poster - when you ride alone, you ride with Hitler. This guy is definitely not riding with Hitler.

I think the Self-portrait with Mannequins photograph (B) would be a better fit within Philly Museum collection. It's witty, narrative, and iconic from Weegee's works - something needed here!
