The Student Design Competition

The Collab Student Design Competition is a remarkable annual event held in conjunction with the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The competition brief is always linked thematically to that year's Collab Design Excellence Award recipient. For the past eighteen years, the event has been an exceptional opportunity for students to experience the rigors of competition and have industry leaders from around the world judge their work. In addition, students interact with colleagues from other universities and institutions, exposing them to an array of design approaches.

In keeping with Collab's educational mission, all participating students and faculty mentors are invited to participate in the awards ceremony and reception during which direct feedback is given by the judges in order to demystify the selection process--an aspect of the event that makes it unique among design competitions. Winners receive monetary awards, and their projects are presented to the public during the Collab Design Excellence Award presentation at the Museum. Winning projects are published here following their recognition.

The 2011 Competition

Students were challenged to design an overnight bag that brings fun and function back to today’s travelers. Any materials and technology could be considered, and the pieces had to be mass reproducible. This year’s 115 entries came from seven design schools: Appalachian State University, North Carolina; Art Institute of Philadelphia; Drexel University, Philadelphia PA; Philadelphia University; Pratt Institute, Brooklyn NY; University of the Arts, Philadelphia; University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
